FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Resources  /  FAQ
What do I do if my power goes out?

If your electric power should ever go out, it helps to know the correct procedure for reporting an electrical outage:

  1. Check your fuses and/or circuit breakers to make sure that the problem is not on your side of service.
  2. Have your account number ready and call us to report your outage.
    Toll Free: 1-888-807-3952
  3. You can also check the outage map here
Why am I required to pay a membership fee?

Each applicant shall pay a membership fee of $5.00 upon application for service and prior to receiving service. The membership fee shall entitle the applicant to be a member of the cooperative. Memberships are not transferable. Members have the right to vote in the election of directors at our annual meeting in June of each year. The membership fee shall be refunded upon termination of service unless all or a portion of the membership fee was applied to member’s final bill.

When is my Bill Due?

Your bill is due by the 10th of each month, except if the 10th falls on a holiday or weekend, in which case the due date will be the next working day. If full payment in not received in one of our offices by the due date, a 5% delinquent penalty will accrue.

Can I choose a different Billing Due Date?

No, Karnes Electric has only one billing cycle.

Does Karnes Electric charge a fee to process my payment?

Karnes Electric does NOT charge a fee to process your payments through our payment options. However, be advised that there are some third-party online bill pay websites that appear to be affiliated with Karnes Electric Cooperative, but are NOT. Doxo.com is one example of a third-party website that are using our logo without permission. They may charge extra fees for your payment, but are NOT affiliated with Karnes Electric. To make sure you are paying Karnes Electric Cooperative directly, visit our website at www.karnesec.org, and click on our SmartHub online bill payment portal.

What number do I call if I need to contact Karnes Electric after business hours?

Our after-hours phone number is the same number as our business-hours number. Please contact us at 1-888-807-3952, and our call-center will assist you with your needs during after-hours.

What is the PCRF?

PCRF stands for Power Cost Recovery Factor. It’s an adjustment to your bill based on our wholesale cost of power. To calculate your PCRF charge, we multiply the factor by the amount of kilowatt hours you used during the billing cycle. When our wholesale power costs go up, the PCRF increases, and vice versa. The PCRF allows Karnes Electric Cooperative, Inc. to adjust for changes in wholesale power costs.

Can I change my electric energy provider?

Not at this time. Karnes Electric is not currently participating in the Texas deregulated market. When deregulation was approved in 1999, the legislation left the cooperatives and municipalities out, with an option to participate at a later date if they chose to do so. Thus far only one cooperative and no municipalities have opted in to the deregulated market. The cooperative continues to monitor deregulation, and will reconsider when it appears to be beneficial for all Karnes Electric members.
