Government in Action Youth Tour

Every June, electric cooperatives send hundreds of High School students from around the country to Washington D.C. annually for the Government-In-Action Youth Tour.

The Government in Action Youth Tour 2025 will begin in Austin, Texas on Sunday, June 15th and will end in Austin, Texas on Sunday, June 22nd. Karnes Electric Cooperative, Inc. will sponsor two students from its service area for an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. The winning applicants will receive a travel package valued at $5,000.00, and will join other Texas High School students for a tour of the White House, the U.S. House and Senate Chambers, the Supreme Court, the Washington National Cathedral, Arlington National Cemetery, the Smithsonian Institution, and many other national sites. Upon returning to Austin, the itinerary will continue with a tour of the Texas State Capitol and a visit to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. The travel package includes air transportation to and from Washington D.C., hotel stay, meals, entrance fees, and $250.00 cash for miscellaneous expenses. Chaperones for the tour will be provided by the Texas Electric Cooperative Association and will accompany the students throughout the tour.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have completed their freshman year of high school by June 2025.
  • Parents or legal guardians must be members of Karnes Electric Cooperative or receive KEC service at their residence.
  • The winners must be able to participate in the Youth Tour held in Washington, D.C. from June 15-22, 2025.
  • The winners must be able to fly in an airplane and ride in a car or bus for up to 12 hours a day (with breaks)
  • The winners will be responsible for transportation to and from Austin, Texas. They will also be responsible for additional spending money for snacks, souvenirs, etc.
  • The winners will be recognized at the Karnes Electric Cooperative’s Annual Meeting that will be held in June of 2025.
  • The winners must be able to participate in the Youth Tour held in Washington, D.C. from June 15-22, 2025.
  • The winners must have a government-issued ID card prior to the trip.

How do I apply?
Students have the option of downloading the application and submitting it to our office or filling out the application online. Please note both type of applications require a parent/legal guardian signature.

Essay Question
Describe a service project that would benefit your community. (Essay should contain a minimum of 400 words).

Who is eligible?
All high school sophomores and juniors whose parent or legal guardian is a member of Karnes EC or receiving KEC service at their residence.

How much does it cost?
Free! Karnes EC will sponsor TWO applicants and will cover all travel expenses including airfare, hotel, and food. However most students like to bring additional money for spending on souvenirs.

Why should I apply?
Students have an opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., visit museums, meet with congressional representatives, and meet new friends from across the State!

When is the deadline to apply?
The deadline is January 31, 2025.
